Kovacs, John William

Found hanged in a pump pit in the Melbourne subway on 17 March 1994. His arms had been tied behind his back with a dog chain. The coroner returned a verdict of suicide. Kovacs was believed to be about to inform on Victorian police officers.

Krahe, Frederick Claude

New South Wales detective Krahe joined the police as a cadet in 1940 and, although a very good detective, was a thoroughly corrupt one. With Ray Kelly he organised abortion rackets, armed robberies, and the extortion of prostitutes and criminals. In 1971 he was exposed by Shirley Brifman, a prostitute in the Kings Cross area, who said she paid him a regular $100 a week. When she was arrested for allegedly procuring a 14-year-old girl, something she bitterly denied, she went public, maintaining that Krahe had helped organise a theft of bonds from a bank and that he and a Queensland officer ‘exchanged’ criminals so that they could work in each other’s state without fear of recognition. Krahe died of thrombosis in December 1981 brought on, said one observer, by ‘kicking too many people to death’.
